Gizmondo: Life and Death | The Art of Failure
This is the story of the Gizmondo - the worst-selling video game system of all time.
It's a story of violence, Windows CE, Swedish mafias, missing money, and sticky balls. And in the end, it all culminated in the crash of a one-of-a-kind Ferrari on a highway in California.
This is The Art of Failure - Gizmondo: Life and Death.
Announced in mid-2022, this one took over a year and some to get to a point I was happy with, hence why it's now releasing in December 2023! It's also my way to wrap up not only The Art of Failure but Stuff We Play as a whole.
In the past 18 months, my husband and I have moved to Germany, I've begun working in a creative role in the video game industry, and I've been fortunate enough to get to speak at events on topics related to my field at events ranging from Gamescom & Devcom to local industry meetups, with more planned for next year.
That said, while I still love producing videos, UA-cam at this point is a hobby, and I'd honestly like to make content on subjects not strictly related to the industry I work in for a living. I'll still be (hopefully) active on Bluesky and Tiktok though, and have already dipped my toes there into making content based on urban planning and my pet snail, Snelly.
Anyway, if you enjoyed this, leave a comment and maybe follow me on those platforms!

No, seriously, it's not clickbait. Over the past year and some, roughly 90% of it has been sold - with downsizing really hitting a critical point lately since we're moving to Germany! And yeah, SWP is going away at the end of the year...kind of. TL;DW - I'm retiring the channel. I use the term "retiring" instead of "quitting" just to leave things open if I have any future video ideas for here. ...
Pokémon X and Y: Where Nostalgia Ends | Retrospective

Pokémon X and Y are a pair of video games released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, following 2012's Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 for the Nintendo DS. These games were the start of a new era for the series - fully 3D on a handheld, a new battle gimmick in the form of Mega Evolution, and overall incredibly divisive. Some people see these games as the high point of the series, and some see them as th...

In the Genesis version of Strider, the “Grandmaster” has a name and his name is Meio according to the booklet, it’s a great game and my first experience with Strider was with the Genesis (Mega Drive I’m British) version. Speaking of “Strider 2” on Mega Drive, the cutscenes were ripped from the Mega Drive port of the original Strider, which is hilariously lazy.

I knew Sonic Xtreme sucked when I first I saw the demo in 1996. It had some interesting ideas, but in practice it felt sloppy, lacked the visual finesse of Genny Sonic games and was on hardware too weak to handle it. That's not to say Sonic couldn't work on Saturn. Sega had that Sonic World teaser in Sonic Jam that felt (almost) right. It wasn't a Playstation/n64 killer, but it was a highly competent Mario 64 clone. I played the hell out of that thing even though it had like 5 minutes of gameplay. lol. I know that eventually became Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast, but in retrospect, I think I preferred the more pedestrian Sonic Jam and if that had been developped/released as a full 3D Sonic game on Saturn, I would have been very satisfied.

I agree having a life option would be the best possible option, but keep in mind the way the base game handles lives is LITERALLY nonsensical. The only difference between losing a life and game overing in X5~X6 is that you have to press 1 more button to move away from the game over screen. Absolutely no purpose. The correct approach would be removing lives entirely, because they do not matter in the slightest, or making them worth again like the old games, which they did.

As a kid, I got Pokemon Blue the month it came out & ended up buying every new gen up to Diamond & Pearl. But even though I was still buying them, I had pretty much been burnt out since Emerald, and even then I wasn't super thrilled. X & Y changed that though. We were finally getting 3D Pokemon & 3D environments. You gotta remember, 3D had become standard back in the N64 era, so we had been waiting a long time for Pokemon to finally get to that point. Pokemon was always formulaic, with everything from your starters to the 2 opposing teams, to the elite 4, to the gym badges, etc etc etc, and it was also incredibly easy. It felt like the series would never evolve (pun intended), and that we'd be stuck with the same setup forever. Then X & Y gave us an exciting new presentation, more animated Pokemon, and Mega evolutions. Old favorites finally got that mythical "4th evolution" we kids used to fantasize about on the playground. The stories of Pokemon games were never GOOD, just good for Pokemon, so that didn't matter. Customization of your characters, the online stuff, and finally getting a new type (a broken type, but still cool) was so memorable. I don't care if other games had better stories or were more complete, X & Y helped reinvigorate my love of the series & get me to care again! Well, at least until Sword & Shield botched things, and Scarlet & Violet finished it off... 😅

No, Bannana mania sucks. I bought the game and beat it. Bad controls, bad art style, bad camera . I thought my controller might be broken. They ported the game using the banana blitz physics and engine and it is noticeable. When playing bannana blitz i had no problem with camera l, controls, or physics. The levels in banana blitz were built for the physics of banna blitz. They use of banana blitz physics with super monkey ball levels is terrible. Super monkey ball demands precise crisp controls which the physics of mania cannot provide. They should have remade the levels around the new physics they have in this game. It sucks dude, alot. One of the worst games i ever played. Each level i play untill I got lucky. Each level a couple hundred deaths. There's is no skill, just luck. I am one of the 3% of players that beat the game and it was not worth it. I beat it to get it off my backlog and to get my moneys worth. Banana mania is a hard F. Banana blitz is a C, and is better then super mario 3d world.

Its already pointless.. might as well get a multi cart... then you might as well just get a pi... i guess i dont see the point in collecting carts etc unless your gonna play on OG hardware or something that is replicating hardware but not an emulator...esp with all the compatibility issues... just get a pi so u can change software etc or keep it pure..

I might be mistaken because it has been almost 2 whole decades (I'm 24 by the way, born in 1999), but I believe this was indeed my first ever exposure to Sonic 3 and Knuckles. I might have played it on the Genesis, but I have more memories of playing Sonic 1 and 2 on the Sega Genesis than Sonic 3. Fun fact, I started playing Sonic games as early as 2002, when I was just around 3 years old. I would also start playing these games on other compilations and eventually emulators in the mid 2000's, such as Gens+ and Kega Fusion.

This is a nice little childhood memory, but do you guys remember those hanging monkey bars or pulleys on playgrounds? Well, when I was a kid, circa 2006-2007, when I was around 7-8 years old, I would go play on the playground, and pretend I was Sonic running around. When I got to the pulleys and monkey bars, I legitimately thought I was in Flying Battery Zone. 🥰🥰🥰

I actually like this collection. I purchased it at 20 dollars on sale. I like the new features that they added last year such Amy Rose being playable for the first time in the four main 2D Sonic games, every character being playable for the main 2D games, all Sonic Game Gear games being added. The package is better than it was during it's first year, but the price is still not justifiable enough. 29.99 would be a reasonable price that includes the DLC.

I got my HD version along with 6 games in the mail today and I already tried it out. I played and beat Ninja Turtles in Time for the SNES and I was amazed by the HD upgrade on my 4K TV and sound on my receiver. I only bought this system because it's compatible to every retro system I had as a kid. It's better to buy 1 HD system with all 3 formats instead of 3 standard ones. Plus I got a great deal on mine from an eBay seller. It normally goes for $98, but I got mine for $60 and it was good as new and still plastic wrapped. So I got a new console for the price of a used one.

This is probably the best video on the whole Gizmondo story out there. There were even things in here I was not aware of and I remember it when it happened. I've owned a Gizmondo since 2007. They had a decent little homebrew scene for a while but the forums eventually died and took all records of that with it. The Gizmondo itself was a nice piece of hardware. Considering it was built with nowhere near the budget Nintendo and Sony had access to, and in record time, it's very impressively polished. The engineering team did a great job. I like the game library too. It doesn't really have a lot of games, but none of them are bad. Sadly the most interesting ones were never released, although most have either a demo or alpha build available. I'm glad to see some hit and myth in this video. There is a leaked version out there. Playing it today is surreal, like you're playing something you're not even supposed to know exists. Agaju is another interesting one, sadly only exists as a tech demo, but it was a real AR pioneer. We wouldn't see AR of that kind again until the 3DS and Smartphones. It kind of makes it all the more surprising the whole thing existed on a business level to fleece investors. They could have just cut and run and not released anything, yet they poured millions into actually producing something of an actually high standard. A couple of minor corrections: At the end you state the Gizmondo uses a proprietary battery, implying replacements cannot be found. Not entirely true. There are some Motorolla phone batteries which are still available new that are Gizmondo compatible. And no, the case is not made of rubber. It has a rubberized coating which does rub off with skin oil, but it can be removed with alcohol leaving the solid plastic shell behind. The rubber finish was nice when they were new, but if you find one today that's in good condition, do not touch it.

This was my first yugioh game, you can actually increase your deck lvl as high as you want you just need to play a ton to get it. Also there's multiple bosses at the end with different codes.

Man, the ending of Sonic Blast with the Eggman planet thing sinking into the sea while Sonic watches, looks suspiciously similar to the ending of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong-Quest, where the same happens to Crocodile Isle. Like, there's no excuse for it NOT being influenced by DKC2 because DKC2 released a whole year before Sonic Blast! I'm not mad about it, it's just... a weird thing I noticed.

20 minutes of trying and failing to use a device for children... Very frustrating to watch

X6 tweaks turned X6 from a game i detested into a game i love. it was so very close to being tHE best X game. it needed to be delayed a year and playtested, and it would have been amazing.
